Scholarship Description: In our laboratory we are interested in how insulin signaling regulates physiology and bdhavior of adult Drosophila. Insulin producing cells (IPCs) in the brain release insulin-like peptides (ILPs) into the circulation for action primarily on fat body cells, but also on other target cells. Insulin regulates a number of physiological processes (feeding, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, stress responses, ageing and so on). ILPs also act to regulate fertility, sleep wakefulness, ethanol sensitivity, and temperature responses. We have identified several neurotransmitters and neuropeptides that regulate the IPCs in the brain. Now we are interested in the neuronal and endocrine pathways that utilize these neurotransmitters and the mechanisms by which they regulate production and release of ILPs under different physiological conditions.
