PhD Scholarships at Technical University of Denmark

College Scholarships 2012
College Scholarships in Polymer Surface Chemistry at Technical University of Denmark

Eligibility:
The ideal applicant is an engineer or Master of Science, has an educational background in chemistry, biochemistry, microfluidics and/or microfabrication and a strong interest in working experimentally and in a cross-disciplinary environment. Strong communication skills and the wish to combine research methods from a wide range of scientific fields will be appreciated. Applicants with documented experience in organic surface chemistry will be preferred.

PhD Scholarships 2012 Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: The main work area of the Ph.D. will be exploration and development of surface chemistry that can integrate drug-releasing organic nanoparticles with polymer microsystems for performing the analysis on cancer cells. The nanoparticles and analysis systems will be produced by colleagues in IndiTreat, and the entire Ph.D. project will be performed in close collaboration with the biologists and medical doctors of IndiTreat to meet their needs for real-world analysis on patient cancer tissue. The Ph.D. project activities will include: Development and use of specific coupling chemistry, e.g. ‘click chemistry’ Immobilization of drug releasing nanoparticles at surfaces or in hydrogels Integration of nanoparticles into polymerhc microanalysis systems Evaluation of the system performance with biologists and medical doctors You will become part of the PolyCell group at DTU Nanotech, a multidisciplinary research team headed by Prof. Niels B. Larsen that aims at developing “smart” polymer micro- and nanotechnology for handling human cells to solve biomedical problems in diagnostics and therapy. Our backgrounds cover physics, chemistry, cell biology, and nanotechnology. We have access to state-of-the-art surface synthesis and surface characterization facilities, cell labs, as well as clean room facilities for both silicon and polymer micro- and nanofabrication.
